Sheltered by the much larger Assateague Island, Chincoteague lies between the Virginia mainland near Wallops Island and Assateague Island, which comes down along the Maryland Coast and ends next to Chincoteague Island. Originally a grazing and livestock range, Chincoteague Island is now a mecca for tourists in search of beaches, wild ponies, oysters, expert Duck Carvers, wildlife artists or just the quiet refuge of a small island community. Its meaning, "Beautiful
Land Across the Water", Chincoteague Island offers a plethora of activities
that surround the ocean, the Bay, or the wildlife in the Chincoteague
Island National Wildlife Refuge. The year 1856 brought a Post office to Chincoteague Island and a year later the 145-foot Assateague Light was constructed to guard the shoals near Chincoteague. With the rest of Virginia siding with the Confederacy in the Civil War, Assateague Light stayed lit for the Union for the duration of hostilities. Today the main forms of commerce in Chincoteague are from the sea and from those who seek the sea. *Excerpts from the Chincoteague
Chamber of Commerce and Beach Net.
